For many, it is the
greatest opera house in the world: the Vienna State Opera. The origin of
the Vienna Opera, the oldest theatrical institution with an unbroken
record of performing in the German-speaking world, goes back to the
beginning of the 18th century. Work on the building commenced in 1861
and was completed in 1869, following plans drawn up by architects August
Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. |
