The Colosseum was the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire and nowadays an impressive reminder of Roman architecture and engineering. Construction started around 70 AD and the theatre was completed 10 years later. It seated 50,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial games, mock sea battles and executions.
