The
Pyramid of Cestius is an ancient pyramid near the Porta San Paolo and
was built around 15 BC as a tomb for Gaius Cestius Epulo. It measures 27
meters in height and 22 meters in length at its base. The shape of the
pyramid has close resemblance to the pyramids of Nubia, especially of
the kingdom of Meroë, which was attacked by Rome in 23 BC. It might be
so that Cestius was involved in these attacks and wanted the pyramid to
serve as a commemoration.
