The
Novodevichy Convent is a historical Russian Orthodox convent in Moscow.
It was founded in 1524 by Grand Duke Vasily III to celebrate the
recapture of Smolensk from the Lithuanians. The convent is also famous
for its New Cemetery, which is the most prestigious in Moscow and the
final resting place for a number of important figures, including Chekhov
and Shostakovich.
