The Puerta del Sol is located in the heart of Madrid, near the Plaza Mayor. Many shops and restaurants are located in this area. Famous landmarks include the monument to King Charles III and the kilometro cero, the symbolic centre of Spain. The square is also the location for the New Year's celebration, when traditionally 12 grapes are eaten when the clock bells at the Puerta del Sol mark the beginning of a new year.
