The
Atocha Station is the largest and one of the most important railway
stations in Spain, connecting Madrid with Barcelona and Seville. The
historic Atocha station was inaugurated in 1851, but largely destroyed
by fire 10 years later. In 1892 it was replaced by a larger station. In
1985 the station was expanded and the train tracks were moved to a new
terminal, while the former terminal was completely renovated and it now
features a tropical garden and shops.
