The
Cristo-Rei monument was built between 1950 and 1959 and sculpted by
Francisco Franco. It was inspired by the famous Christ the Redeemer
statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The base of the statue is in the form
of a gate, measuring 75 meters tall, with on top of it the statue of
Christ, measuring an additional 28 meters. An elevator takes you to the
base of the statue where you will have a splendid view of Lisbon and the
Tagus river.
