The
25th of April suspension bridge was inaugurated in 1966 and is, because
of its similar appearance, often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in
San Fransisco. The bridge is one of the longest suspension bridges in
the world at more than 2.2 kilometers long. Until 1974 the bridge was
named after Portugal's right-wing dictator, Antonio de Oliveira Salazar.
After the revolution 1974, the bridge was called the 25th of April
bridge to celebrate the change in power on April 25, 1974.
