The
Panathinaiko Stadium is an ancient stadium which was used during the
Panathenaic Games. It was remade in marble in 329 BC and was enlarged
and renovated by Herodes Atticus in 140 AD, to accommodate more than
50,000 spectators.It is the only major stadium in the world built
entirely of white marble. The remnants of the ancient structure were
excavated and refurbished and the stadium was used during the 1896
Olympics. During the 2004 Olympics it was the venue for the archery
competition, and the finish of the Marathon. |
